Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day to the most wonderful husband and daddy in the world!!!! The kids and I are so blessed to have you in our lives! You really are the best and we love you so much! I don't know any other man who could handle three infants with such ease and grace. I always knew you'd be a great dad - looks like you found your purpose in this life, honey! Dale would be so proud!
P.S. The kids dug into their new piggy banks and bought you the Nintendo Wii so we can have many late nights bowling in the basement! Tyler says, "bring it on big daddy"!!!

Little Wonders

**I started this blog as a way to share photos and stories with our friends and family, but somehow it has evolved. It is therapeutic for me - helps me see the humor in this insanity! Thanks for being a part of it! This blog entry is very personal - something I haven't really shared with many people. For some reason I feel led to tell this story. The story of why I named this blog "Little Wonders"...

In vitro fertilization is intense. It challenges you both mentally and physically, sometimes pushing you further than you ever thought you could go. For Jeff and I, it was an emotional journey mixed with fear, joy, excitement, pain, tears, laughter, prayer and wonder. We relied heavily on our faith to get us through it all.

After the initial surgery to remove my eggs, we were told that they were able to retreive 17 viable eggs - we couldn't have asked for better news. We were on cloud nine. We were expecting a phone call the next day to tell us how many fertilized. Hoping for at least 10 to have fertilized, we were devastated to learn that only 4 made it. This was extremely low, and it was only day 1. These eggs had to at least make it 3 days in order for them to be ready to be put back. Not only did they have to continue to divide and grow, but they had to be healthy enough to survive the process of being transferred back to me. Things were not looking good, and our normally optimistic doctor sounded worried. They tentatively scheduled the transfer surgery for day 3, and we were told we would not hear from them again until we arrived for the procedure - even if none of the eggs survived. The next day and a half were absolutely agonizing. I mean, less than 25% fertilized - how on earth did we expect any to have survived beyond that?

I couldn't think. I could barely breath. I just prayed. And so did Jeff. We were faced with the very real possibility that we would never have our own biological children. I remember standing in the shower the next morning, crying. I couldn't take any more. I was exhausted. I knew this was something that was much bigger than I was, and I gave it all up. I gave it all to God. And I asked Him to tell me everything was going to be okay. I NEEDED Him to tell me everything was going to be okay.

The morning of the transfer, the alarm went off. Normally, I just roll over in my sleep and hit snooze. Not that morning. That morning, there was a song. A song I've heard a hundred times. But this time it was different. I just laid there and listened to the words. Words I had heard so often, but never really heard. Right then, I knew everything was going to be okay. And I've known ever since.

I carry the words to that song with me everywhere I go. I thank God every day for the song, and for our Little Wonders.

Little Wonders - by Rob Thomas

let it go
let it roll right off your shoulder
don't you know
the hardest part is over
let it in
let your clarity define you
in the end
we will only just remember how it feels

our lives are made
in these small hours
these little wonders
these twists & turns of fate
time falls away
but these small hours
these small hours
still remain

let it slide
let your troubles fall behind you
let it shine
until you feel it all around you
and i don't mind
if it's me you need to turn to
we'll get by
it's the heart that really matters in the end

our lives are made
in these small hours
these little wonders
these twists & turns of fate
time falls away
but these small hours
these small hours
still remain

all of my regret
will wash away some how
but i cannot forget
the way i feel right now

our lives are made
in these small hours
these little wonders
these twists and turns of fate
time falls away
but these small hours
these small hours
still remain

SLOW DOWN...

...no, hurry up...ok, maybe a little slower...no, faster would be good...maybe just stay right there for a moment.

This is the back and forth conversation I have with myself when I'm trying to decide if I want them to grow up or not! Some moments I wish I could freeze - these times are so precious and the realization that they are so fleeting breaks my heart. I mean, how many parents get to watch their tiny 2 pound son quadruple his weight in three months? He's growing so quickly, Jeff and I swear he looks bigger EVERY morning when we get him out of bed. Slow down baby Tyler - you're going to be a grown boy in the blink of an eye. Slow down baby Elli - there will come a day when you'll be too big for me to pick you up out of the crib only to be greeted by that cute little smile. Slow down baby Haley - those sweet little noises you make when you eat are music to my ears. I will miss this stuff. It's priceless.

BUT... then there are those OTHER moments (or days). Take yesterday for instance. The insanity began at 3am and did not commence until 11:30pm last night. Screaming. All of them. All day. OK - hurry up and grow up so we don't feel tempted to put you out on the porch with the dog. Hurry up baby Tyler - I really can't handle being barfed on for much longer. Hurry up baby Elli - those "blow out" diapers are just plain wrong. Hurry up baby Haley - I can't wait for the day when you can wake up without wailing at the top of your lungs. I won't miss this stuff. It makes me miss my old life.

BUT...they slept like champs last night. Woke up to eat at 3am and not another peep until after 7am. I was so proud! They all had groggy looks on their faces this morning, like they weren't quite sure exactly where they were. So cute. Freeze that moment...

So Big!

Haley: 8lbs 5oz

Tyler: 7lbs 10oz
Ellison: 8lbs 8oz
Thanks to my good friend Regina for these amazing photos! Some day I will get out their birth announcements and you can see some more of her work! She did an amazing job! Trying to capture three squirmy babies on film cannot be an easy task, and she made it look like a piece of cake! If you live in the area and would like to have her do portraits for you, just look her up at www.gentryphotography1.blogspot.com - you'll be glad you did!!

Dream Feeding

I kept reading about this thing called a "dream feed" - it seems to be something that works when you're trying to encourage babies to sleep through the night. A lot of triplet moms swear by it, so we thought we'd give it a shot! We normally feed the kids at 7pm, give them a bath, then put them to bed, usually by 8pm. They eat again at 11pm and again at 3am. They are like clockwork - someone always wakes up within 10 minutes of the 3am feeding time.

The theory is that at the 11pm feed, you get them out of bed without waking them and give them a full bottle in their sleep. Sounds crazy, but it actually worked for the girls! They basically slept the entire time they ate. Tyler...well, he has his own ideas of how to go about things, so he was wide awake! So back to bed we put them, and the girls never woke up! I was amazed! I just knew I was going to get some good sleep - finally! WRONG. They woke up at 1:30am screaming...all of them...loudly...really loudly...and mad...really mad...

I think this is how the conversation in the nursery transpired:

HALEY: Hey Elli - you awake?

ELLI: I am now.

TYLER: Me too, me too!!

HALEY: I'm hungry.

ELLI: Now that you mention it...

TYLER: Me too, me too!!

HALEY: Why haven't they fed us yet? I swear it's like 1:00am already!

ELLI: Good point - I think they forgot to feed us at 11:00. Last thing I remember is the bath at 8:00. What do you think, Tyler?

TYLER: I hate baths

HALEY: So do you think they're trying to pull one over on us?

ELLI: Hmmm...maybe. I really don't remember eating after our bath.

TYLER: I really hate baths

HALEY: Seriously, I think they forgot to feed us!!

ELLI: That is SO not cool!!!

TYLER: MOM, MOM, MOM, MOM, MOM, MOM, MOM, MOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You forgot to feed Elli and Haley!!!

ELLI: You're not hungry, Tyler?

TYLER: Nope. I ate at 11:00. Did I mention that I hate baths?

ELLI & HALEY: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Needless to say, the "dream feed" was a total nightmare! I'm starting to realize that my life is no longer in my control. Bummer.

Until now, we've been doing sponge baths since they are so tiny and can't really hold themselves upright. This is their first official bath! The girls loved it immediately...Tyler...not so much. This is so much fun!!!!

Happy Mother's Day!!!

I feel like the luckiest mom in the world! We have been blessed with three precious children, and amazingly, we haven't completely lost our minds (yet)!!!!
People keep asking how in the world we are managing everything... lots of prayer, lots of love, lots of patience, and lots of caffeine!
